Herculiner Bed Coating F.A.Q.

Q What is the material used in Herculiner?
A: Herculiner is a mixture of polyurethane coating with rubber granules to provide a tough, textured finish.

Q: How can it be applied?
A: Herculiner can be applied with a brush/roller or with a spray compressor. (Brush and two (2) rollers are included with each kit.) It must be applied in a well ventilated area.

Q: What colors are available?
A: Black, Gray Red & White.

Q: How much is the cost and in what size containers will it be available?
A: The retail kit comes with 1 gallon of Herculiner, additional quarts are available for long beds or other applications.

Q: What surfaces will it bond to?
A: Herculiner will bond to most clean/dry surfaces, including painted or primed steel. Prepping the surface is critical for best results; instructions are included with the kit, or you can just click on "Instructions" icon on this or any other page of the Herculiner site.

Q: What is the shelf life of Herculiner?
A: If unopened, Herculiner can be stored for several years.

Q: How tough is Herculiner?
A: Herculiner won’t chip, flake or peel and is resistant to damage from gasoline and most chemicals & solvents. It can withstand years of heavy duty use.

Q: How can I remove Herculiner once it's applied?
A: You can use Xylene while product is still wet, but if it dries, it's permanent.

Q: What happens if I get Herculiner on my hands?
A: Clean off immediately with Xylene, then wash hands with soap and water.

Q: How long does it take Herculiner to dry?
A: You should allow Herculiner to dry about 9-12 hours before any light use and allow 24 hours for a complete cure. Curing begins when Herculiner is exposed to atmospheric moisture. Therefore, with higher humidity, curing time is shorter.

Q: How thick should it be applied?
A: First coat forms a good base. After 1 hour to 1 ½ hours to dry; then apply a second coat that will cover any open pores. One (1) gallon covers 6’ beds with 2 coats; an extra quart is needed for 8’ beds.

Q: Can you repair a section that has been damaged?
A: Yes, Herculiner adheres to itself, while other coatings do not and would have to be removed for gouging repair.

Q: Is Herculiner flammable?
A: Yes, but after drying, it is no longer flammable.

Q: Can I apply Herculiner in the winter?
A: Yes, Herculiner can be applied between 32° F and 95° F. However, the colder the temperature and the lower the humidity, the longer the curing process will take. Additionally, it MUST BE APPLIED IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA.

Q: What is the difference between Herculiner's formula versus the other spray-on coatings out there?
A: Herculiner has a proprietary polyurethane and rubber formula. Herculiner is the only do-it-yourself bedliner with a tough, thick, skid-resistant finish that won’t chip, flake or peel.

Q: What is included in a kit?
A: 1 gallon of protective coating
2 rollers for easy application
1 abrasive pad for scuffing/prepping bed
1 roller handle
1 gallon can opener
1 - 2" brush for tight spots/corners
Plus: Bed liner application instructions in English, French, and Spanish AND application instructions for other uses (also in English, French, and Spanish).

Q: What is not included in a kit that will be needed to do the job right?
A: One Quart of Xylene, Acetone or MEK (solution to prep the surface of the bed before coating)
Rubber gloves
Stir stick (We recommend a drill with a paint mixing attachment.)
Paint tray and some rags
Tape for masking off areas

Q: What is the average cost for a dealer installed spray-on bed liner?
A: There are a number of different products and dealers offering bed liner spray-on services. Finished product mil thickness, skid resistant properties, and costs vary by location from $300.00 to over $500.00.

Q: Can I use Herculiner Coating for other uses?
A: Yes, the Herculiner Coating can be used on an array of surfaces from concrete to plastic as well as an undercoating to ramp coatings, etc. Just go to the Other Uses page and see what other surfaces you can apply it to.
