Car giant Toyota, whose UK plant is its biggest in Europe, hopes to reach worldwide sales of almost 10 million this year, it was announced.

The company, which makes the Avensis and Auris models at Burnaston, Derbyshire, sold 9.37 million vehicles in 2007 - a 6% increase on the 2006 total.

At a media lunch in London, Toyota Europe president Tadashi Arashima said the firm hoped to increase sales by 5% to 9.85 million worldwide in 2008.
