A Newport News tow truck driver who was killed while towing a car was honored today by friends and family.
Around 50 tow truck drivers from across the peninsula, along with just as many motorcyclists gathered at a Hampton parking lot to say goodbye to Darrell Jones.
The 36-year-old father was killed early Saturday morning. The car he was attempting to repossess, rolled backwards and Jones was somehow pinned him under the truck.
His colleagues, along with his motorcycle riding buddies all showed up for a parade to his funeral.
It was a sad occasion for everyone who knew Jones.
“Darrell had an extended family and what you see here is an example of it. The many folks that loved him as a friend, that rode motorcycles with him,” said Tim Smith, a friend of Jones’.
“When you’re towing something anything can happen, unfortunately it happened in this case and he suffered the consequences and it’s just a shame because Darrell was a very loving person,” said Tim Smith. The two worked together at Pensu Towing.
The tow trucks and motorcyclists were escorted by police to Jones’ funeral service in Grafton.
