A slumping market for trucks has one Albuquerque dealership taking drastic steps and getting national attention because of it.

Zangara Dodge is cutting sticker prices on its Dodge Rams by 50 percent. Managers said in the last 90 days they’ve seen a 30 percent decline in sales on the Ram.

Managers also said the sale actually puts them at a loss. They lose about $10,000 on each truck, but said they need to move the ‘08 trucks out to bring in the ’09s.

“In the last 90 days we’ve experienced a 30 percent decline in truck sales. We had all these trucks rolling in for this big summer event and the sales weren’t happening. We had to do something drastic to get the market attention,” said Bob Tabor.

The situation couldn’t be more opposite at Smartcar of Albuquerque. The fuel efficient cars are in high demand.

The owners there said there is a 19 month waiting list for the Smartcar. They said while the high cost of fuel is hurting truck sales, it’s helping small car sales.
