Navistar is testing its MaxxForce 13 engines that are mated on International ProStar+ trucks. Navistar’s new engine will be meeting EPA 2010 emission needs.
The MaxxForce 13 engines will be generating 430 horsepower and making a pulling power of 1,7000 lb ft. the manufacturer will be producing 6 pickups every day. The engine is mated to 13 speed Eaton Fuller transmission system.
Driving these International ProStar+ trucks is not a difficult task even when fully loaded.
During its test run the driver experienced power in every gear. Though the truck gave a warning light for engine but the performance from the engine never felt low.
MaxxForce 13 engine is more capable than previously employed Cummins ISX. Trucks are offered with both of the engine option, and both gave a smooth ride.
The truck is extreme smooth to ride on open highway, but faced a little inconvenience when in traffic. In traffic the yellow engine light glowed up and the motor asked for regeneration at the stop. The shut off period is set at two minutes.
MaxxForce is with “in-cylinder” solution that makes the engine EPA2010 compliant. The EPA 2010 doesn’t allow more than 0.3 g/bhp-hr nitros oxide and near to zero particulate release.
At present the engine 0.5 grams NOx which is more than what is needed but Navistar can still sell the trucking the USA as manufacturer will be using banked emission for light and medium duty trucks. The company is under process to develop more advanced engines that will be meeting 0.2 emission benchmark before they end-up using all the credit.
These new Navistar engine are manufactured in partnership with MAN in Germany. First of the MaxxForce engines were manufactured overseas and for North American vehicles these engines are manufactured at Navistar’s engine manufacturing plant located in Huntsville, Alabama.
The CGI block employed on the engine its self is a masterpiece of technological advancement. The CGI block is lighter is durable and is stronger.
Navistar has already decided to dropout SCR option. New trucks wont be using Cummins power and currently they don’t offer 15 liter engine. Navistar has partnered with Caterpillar to manufacture new 15 liter models of whose production will be starting in early 2011 and will be available in mid 2011.
There is lot of expectation from the MaxxForce 13 by the company and also from its buyers.
